Ronda

Ronda is an extremely historic town located on a plateau 60 kilometres from Marbella and 116 kilometres from Malaga that is known for bullfighting and bandits. The town is divided into two sections by the 100 metre deep ‘Tago’ Gorge. The town offers some stunning views.

Ronda is a very historic town, not only in the Malaga Province, but in all of Spain. The oldest bullring or ‘Plaza de Toros’ is located in the village and Ronda is therefore very renowned for bullfighting.  The town has hundreds of monuments including the Puente Nuevo that is the bridge that crosses the Gorfe and is an architectural wonder. The village was an execution place during the Civil War and the ‘Tago’ Gorge is the gorge spoken of in Hemingway’s For Whom the Bell Tolls. There are many different architectural influences in the village: Moorish, Gothic, Renaissance and these styles are all present in the churches, gates and buildings located in Ronda. There is a Moorish Palace called the “Palacio de Mondragon” and Arab Baths.

Ronda is not only rich in history in culture, but also rich in nature. It is home to the Sierra de las Nieves Nature park which protects hundreds of species of plant and animal species. It is a beautiful park to visit for those looking for a peaceful and natural escape from the bustle of the city.
